inlingua Malta – Celebrating 30 years

Our Method

At inlingua Malta, we don’t just teach English, we teach English the inlingua way

1. Our trainers conduct the lesson in the target language only.
You should start thinking in the target language as soon as possible. Translation confuses and wastes time.

2. Your trainer will give you the opportunity to speak as much as possible during the lesson.
The only way in which you will learn a language is by speaking it.  After all, you can only learn a new sport by practising  it from the start.  So why not speak English from day one?

3. Trainers conduct the greater part of the lesson orally, with the book closed.
It is a fact that a language is learned by using and hearing it, therefore, you should be less reliant on your eyes during the lessons.

4. We concentrate more on teaching structures (i.e. how words are put together) than on teaching individual words
Language is not a collection of words, but a system of word combinations.

5. Your trainer will diagnose the extent of your knowledge before supplying a model or providing a solution themselves. They should build on your knowledge and fill in gaps as soon as possible.

6. We keep theoretical explanations to a minimum.
In order to drive a car it is not necessary to know how the engine works. You should be able to induce a rule from examples.

7. You are encouraged to play a creative role in the learning process.
In order for you to be constructive and creative in your use of the target language, you must experiment. It is impossible to memorize a number of sentences and phrases which you think you will need one day.

8. Our trainers understand that everyone is different, and they use various teaching techniques that support the individual strengths of each student. The goal of the inlingua method is to make language learning as efficient and pleasant as possible. The method is flexible to give teachers the possibility to adapt their approach to the individual requirements of the student. Factors such as linguistic talent, motivation, openness and cultural particularities have to be considered.

9. We teach you how to use the language in practical situations, as well as the correct formal structures that help you communicate clearly and easily. A structural approach to language learning is one which places the main emphasis on learning the structures or grammatical items of a language. The functional approach emphasizes learning how to express oneself in situations which occur in everyday life. The most efficient teaching method is the combination of both approaches. The inlingua method teaches structure on the basis of functional situations.
