Easter is around the corner and there is no better place to celebrate it than in Malta.
It all begins on the Friday preceding Good Friday and ends with an Easter feast! Here are the top five things you shouldn’t miss out on during this ceremonious time of year.
Watch the Procession
Holy Week starts the Friday before Good Friday when the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is carried in a procession through Valletta and also through some of the other small villages. It’s an experience you will never forget!

How beautiful! #mdina #stpaulscathedral #cathedralmuseum #malta #weekendbreak
Maundy Thursday is when the celebrations are taken up a notch. This is the day when the Last Supper is commemorated. Traditionally, Maltese worshipers pay visits to the seven ‘Altars of Repose’ in seven different churches. It is a wonderful sight to behold with the beautifully decorated altars and candle lit chapels. A great place to visit on Maundy Thursday is St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina or in the neighbouring village of Rabat which is home to seven churches.
The Passion of the Christ on Good Friday
On Good Friday 17 different villages commemorate the Passion of the Christ. It is a solemn and dark procession with full re-enactments of the Death of Jesus Christ, however it is a huge part of the Easter experience in Malta with beautiful pageantry, costumes and visual representations!
Eating Traditional Sweets on Easter Sunday
The bells are ringing and the sweets are out, it is officially Easter Sunday – a day for fun, celebration and sweets! Try the traditional figolla, which is an almond filled pastry in the shape of either a rabbit, lamb, heart or fish. Another traditional sweet you have to try is the kwarezimal, also known as ‘Lenten’ cookies, which are sweet biscuits. Keep your eye out for qagħaq tal-għazel – or ‘honey rings’ and the qagħaq tal-appostili – or ‘Apostles Bread Rings’.
