Are you looking for a place to grab a coffee during your break, have a quick bite at lunchtime, shop for essentials, or unwind after classes? Sliema’s name comes from the Maltese word ‘sliem,’ meaning ‘peace,’ but today it is one of Malta’s most popular cities, far from the quiet it once had. This guide highlights some useful spots around the school, making it easier to enjoy your day while studying. Whether you’re craving delicious food, looking for a cosy café, or just need a reliable place to shop, here are some of the best locations to check out!
Shopping
Spar Sliema
Location: 72, Triq Tigne
This grocery shop is the closest to the school and has a great selection of pastries and yoghurt if you are looking for a quick breakfast in the morning. It is also perfect for a quick stop after school.
Lidl Sliema
Location: Triq Amery
Planning to do your weekly shopping after school? The Sliema Lidl is just a five-minute walk from inlingua and has everything you are looking for. Its wide selection and budget-friendly prices make it perfect for students.
Welbees Sliema
Location: High Street
Similar to Lidl, Welbees is just a short walk from the school and offers a wide selection of products. However, here you will find more organic and gluten-free options. If you forget to pack lunch but don’t feel like going to a restaurant, they also sell fresh, warm meals by the kilo.
The Point Shopping Mall
Location: Tigné Point
Malta’s largest shopping mall, featuring international retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. It is a great place to shop, dine, or simply hang out with classmates after school.
The Plaza Shopping Centre
Location: Triq Bisazza
It is closer than The Point, and just as useful. Right next to the school, this smaller shopping mall is perfect if you don’t have time to get lost in the larger ones. They have clothing stores, restaurants, cafés, and even a gym.
Dining and Drinks
Ta’ Kris Restaurant
Location: 80 Fawwara Lane
If you would like to try traditional Maltese cuisine, this hidden gem is just a short walk from the school. Not just the cuisine, but the restaurant itself is also authentically Maltese, as it is located at the site of one of Sliema’s oldest bakeries. It preserves its original features and showcases traditional Maltese tiles, warm walls, and dark wood furniture, creating a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Their rabbit stew and bragioli are must-tries!
Abrazo Café
Location: 13 Triq Tigne’
Named “Abrazo,” meaning “hug” in Spanish, this café is just as warm and cosy as its name suggests! It’s right next to our school and offers excellent coffee, pastries, and light meals at great prices. Perfect for a quick coffee break, catching up on schoolwork, or meeting friends.
Hole in the Wall
Location: 31 High Street
One of Malta’s oldest bars was literally just a ‘hole in the wall’ when the owners sold takeaway wine directly from large containers to off-duty airmen and soldiers in the early 20th century, who referred to it as such. Today, it is known for its quirky charm and extensive drink menu, making it perfect for an evening out after a long week.
Relaxation Spots
Fort Tigné
Location: Tigne Point, Censu Xerri
Just a short walk from the school, Fort Tigné offers a glimpse into Malta’s history with its impressive 18th-century architecture and stunning views of Valletta. Nearby, Tigné Beach provides the perfect spot to relax by the sea. Whether exploring the fort or sitting on the beach, it’s an ideal place to enjoy the day.
Tower Road Promenade
Location: Tower Road
From Sliema Ferries to Ballutta Bay, this promenade offers a magnificent view of the sea, with plenty of beaches along the way, such as Font Ghadir, home to the so-called ‘Roman Baths.’ Despite the name, the artificial pools there are actually from the 19th century, not Roman times, dating back to the Victorian era. It is perfect for enjoying a long walk at sunset or relaxing on the beach to unwind after a busy day.
Independence Garden
Location: Tower Road
The Independence Garden, commonly known as the ‘Cat Park’ because of the cat colony that lives there, is a peaceful green space with shaded benches, making it ideal for a quiet lunch or a study session outdoors. It is not just for cat lovers but if you are a fan of these furry creatures, you might even get some purrs in exchange for a little petting.
From delicious food to relaxing by the sea, Sliema offers plenty of options to recharge after school. If you prefer to explore other locations a bit further from school, check out our travel guide!
